Bulls buzz off, FIIs sell, gloom persists, Sensex crashes, 2862.55

BSE Sensitive Index

A record fall in Dow Jones and the overall crisis in financial markets worldwide showed its effects on the pivotals as the Sensex fell sharply by more than 70 points on the Bombay Stock Exchange today.

The crash of 512 points in the Dow Industrials had the Asian markets following suit as they dipped southwards during the day. The economic crisis in Russia, the Japanese slump and the easing of the dollar made the BSE grim as bulls stayed away from the trading activity in apprehension ever since the market opened.

The foreign institutional investors put selling pressure and the Sensex fell sharply as except the Unit Trust of India, no one was seen on the buying counter.

Shares of ACC, Reliance and Tisco were sold in a frenzy by the FIIs. Software industry was worst hit as their maximum shares were sold in the market. Trading remained bad throughout the day and market players kept a low profile seeing the overall scenario worldwide, leading dealers said.

The BSE Sensex (30 scrips) opened lower at 2862.24 points in a dull market. It marked the day's high of 2882.88 points and a low of 2850.30 points but could not sustain the nominal increase and finally closed at 2862.55 points, recording a dip of 71.30 points as compared to its previous close of 2933.85 points.
