PM to address CMs on power reforms

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee will convene a meeting of chief ministers of all the states to discuss the mode of implementation of power reforms at New Delhi on March 3, Union Energy Minister Suresh Prabhu said in Rajasthan today.

After laying the foundation stone of the fifth unit of 250 mw super-thermal power station here, Prabhu told a gathering that all political parties would have to evolve a consensus on the power reforms.

Leaders of all political parties would also be invited to attend the CMs meeting, he said.

While appreciating the power reforms and privatisation of existing state electricity boards (SEBs) by the states, the minister said the centre will bring in the budget session of Parliament a legislation on strengthening of the provisions of the present Electricity Act to check power theft and transmission losses.

The states, which have effected the power reforms would be given all economic and technical assistance, Prabhu said.

There is an utmost need to punish those who are involved in power theft and responsible for transmission losses so that the power supply and demand ratio be maintained, Prabhu said.
