Fruit and vegetable-based processed Food
exempted from excise duty

Government on Wednesday exempted food preparations based on fruits and vegetables from excise duty making wide range of products of common use like pickles, sauces, ketchup and juices cheaper.

The special excise duty on aerated soft drink concentrates for vending machines reduced to 16 per cent from 24 per cent and will now bear a total duty of 32 per cent, Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha announced in the Lok Sabha while presenting the budget proposals.

Sinha also announced 15 per cent surcharge on cigarettes, increase in the levy on bidis from Rs 6 to Rs 7 per thousand and hike in total duty on pan masala from 55 to 60 per cent saying it was part of the measures to discourage use of such products on health grounds.
