Balco workers to continue strike despite Supreme Court order

Balco Employees Union (BEU) Thursday vowed to continue its indefinite strike a day after the Supreme Court (SC) asked the Chhatisgarh government to take steps to protect both the workers and management of the company.

General Secertary of the BEU, P N Sharma, said the apex court's ruling has no meaning as the agitating employees continued to strike work in a peaceful manner.

"We will continue with our peaceful agitation against the manner in which the government has sold its majority stake to Sterlite Industries," he said.

Sharma accused the government of creating law and order problem by sending a delegation of BJP members to the plant site.

"We have not stopped any one from going inside the plant and have instructed our workers to ensure that the temperature is maintained at the right level to prevent any damage to the smelter," he said.

He said the management's move to close down three of the four power generating units was aimed at creating problems, adding that the management will be responsible for any damage resulting to the plant from power failure.

Meanwhile, Balco's new MD S D Krishnan has left for a tour of the company's Korba facility.
