Cops await controversial tape from Sebi on Rathi's talk

Bombay Stock Exchange president Anand Rathi to resign last week in the wake of his alleged involvement in a bear cartel.

The tape records the alleged telephonic conversation Rathi had with a BSE surveillance officer on March 2 wherein he sought price sensitive information on outstanding position of leading players in the stock market.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Economic Offences Wing, Himanshu Roy said on Monday that he had indeed visited Sebi's office on March 8 to meet its high-ranking officials and get a first hand information on the controversy leading to Rathi's unceremonious exit from the BSE.

"We have so far not got any such tape. Also no complaint has been registered so far against any person in this case," Roy said.

Normally, it should be the Sebi or any aggrieved investor who may file the complaint. In such an event, the law would set into motion, he said, adding it was too early to comment on what his department was doing at the moment on this aspect.

Roy, however, opined that it would be inappropriate to say that there was no case at all. He refused to elaborate further saying that so far no investigations had been made because no case had been registered.
