Decision on Balco strike deferred, stir continuesThe indefinite strike by the Balco workers continued on Wednesday as the employees' unions deferred taking any decision on resuming work as they had not yet received the Supreme Court directive, asking them to inform the apex court by May 8 if workers were willing to report for duty. After a core committee meeting of Balco Bachao Sanyukt Abhiyan Samity, its general secretary Makhan Lal Rajak told PTI over phone from Balco township in Korba, "the core committee deferred taking any decision on the future of the strike as it has yet to receive the Supreme Court order." The Supreme Court had yesterday asked the Balco employees, who are on strike since March 2 against its divestment, to decide if they could resume work after the management said it would not retrench any employee and was willing to pay two months' salary as advance. As they have not received the order it would be difficult from their part to take a decision on the issue, the AITUC leader said adding, "if the apex court has directed the striking employees to resume duty they have to obey the order. It would take a decision accordingly." He expected that the unions would in a day or two get the Supreme Court order. It was also decided on Wednesday, after reviewing the entire situation following the court judgement, that the core committee will also meet on Friday to take a final decision.
