Reliance Life mulls skin, tissue banksBS Corporate Bureau Reliance Life Sciences is planning to set up skin and tissue banks along with its original plans of setting up an umbilical cord stem cell repository for treating blood disorders, Firuza Parikh, founder director of RLS said in a presentation on stem-cell research at the annual general meeting of the Organisation of Pharmaceutical Producers of India. Along with these banks, RLS also wants to set up a cell transplantation centre, gene-based and cell-based therapies in a clinical environment in order to maximise the scope and usage of biotechnology in India, Parikh said. Speaking on stem-cell research, Parikh elucidated on the massive scope of curing hitherto incurable degenerative diseases such as Parkinson's or leukaemia and, in the range of 7 to 20 years, it could also see tissue and organ transplants. For the pharmaceutical industry, it could translate into more business opportunities. It would mean more generic biotechnology, more pathway related products, toxicology related studies on stem cells, encapsulated stem cells and now clinical tests could be done on stem cells instead of humans, Parikh said. RLS, one of the 10 research institutes shortlisted by the National Institute of Health, US for funding from the US for stem cell research, plans to concentrate on embryonic and haematopoietic cells.
