Balco initiates mass transfers, withdraws VRS offerThe management of Bharat Alluminium Company has decided on en-mass transfer of employees in New Delhi and other metros, and has already issued transfer orders to nearly 90 employees at its Delhi office. The move comes after the company virtually withdrew its earlier offer of voluntary retirement scheme. Balco Employees Union general secretary P N Sharma said the transfers were illegal and violated the shareholders' agreement signed between the government and the Sterlite Industries, when Balco was privatised. Initiated on Monday, the transfers would lead to movement of 160 employees across the four metros to its operational hub at Korba in Chhattisgarh. Sharma said the move would be tantamount to backdoor retrenchment. He further said that the management had told them that it would not be possible for the company to implement the VRS as the company was in the process of chalking out a major expansion programme, and added that the government and Sterlite management had colluded to cheat the workers. Balco had launched a VRS last year as part of the understanding with the striking employees following its privatisation. ALSO READ:
