PM not to be grilled by JPC over Johari firm

The chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the stocks scam on Tuesday indicated that there was no possibility of questioning the prime minister over the scam-tainted Johari firm Cyberspace.

Prakash Mani Tripathi told reporters after Tuesday's JPC hearing that there was no link between the inauguration of the company in Lucknow by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the stocks muddle.

"The prime minister inaugurated Cyberspace in the capacity of a Member of Parliament from Lucknow and there is no link with the stocks scam," he said.

The JPC chairman said no member had raised any question regarding the inauguration of the company in Lucknow by Vajpayee.

"The prime minister could not have inaugurated the company after checking its accounts," he said, adding that this should be seen merely in the context of the prime minister encouraging some economic activity.

Replying to a query whether Vajpayee's inauguration of Cyberspace would not have influenced investors, Tripathi said, "You are reading too much into it."

Cyberspace, a Century Consultant Group company, is owned by Arvind Johari. Johari, along with his brother Anand, a former director of the Siti Co-operative Bank, Lucknow, was quizzed at Tuesday's JPC hearing.
