Infosys beats Wipro in the numbers game againBS Research Bureau Infosys Technologies continued to lead Wipro in terms of software exports and growth in sales and profit margins second year in a row. Infosys reported a healthy performance during the quarter ended March 2002 with sales growing 21.05 per cent compared with Wipro's 0.66 per cent. Infosys' fourth-quarter net profit moved up 15.77 per cent, while Wipro's bottomline grew 2.18 per cent. In FY02, Infosys' sales rose almost 37 per cent compared with Wipro's 12.14 per cent, while the net profit of the software majors rose 29.6 per cent each. Overseas software business of Infosys Technologies aggregated at Rs 25.524 billion in FY02, up 36.20 per cent over the previous year compared with Wipro's overseas software business of Rs 22.509 billion in FY02, up 28.33 per cent over the previous year. During the FY01, Infosys pipped Wipro from the top slot as the largest software exporters among listed companies. In FY01, Infosys' overseas software business aggregated Rs 18.740 billion against Wipro's Rs 17.540 billion. In FY00, Wipro was the leading software exporter with exports of Rs 10.505 billion compared with Infosys Rs 8.517 billion. In profitability parameters, Infosys has taken lead with operating profit margins of 42.40 per cent in FY02 compared with Wipro's 31.57 in the same year. The margins are, however, not strictly comparable as Wipro's software exports accounts for 64.91 per cent of the total sales compared with Infosys's 98.0 per cent of the total sales. Infosys has also overtaken Wipro in terms of expenditure towards their employees on account of salaries and wages and travelling allowances. Infosys' expenditure on salaries and travelling expenses aggregated Rs 12.544 billion, up 45.02 per cent. Wipro on the other hand spends Rs 12.366 billion (up 21.56 per cent over the previous year) on salaries and travelling allowances. Infosys expenditure toward salaries and wages rose by 55.77 per cent at Rs 11.178 billion, while its expenditure on travelling allowances declined 7.22 per cent at Rs 1.365 billion. Wipro's expenditure of salaries and wages rose 19.87 per cent to Rs 4.963 billion, while travelling allowances rose 22.7 per cent to Rs 7.403 billion. ALSO READ:
