US steel safeguard duty challenge to WTO system: Maran

Commerce and Industry Minister Murasoli
Maran Commerce and Industry Minister Murasoli Maran on Sunday described as a ''challenge to the WTO'' the safeguard duty imposed by the United States to protect its indigenous steel industry, but ruled out India further tightening its own anti-dumping measures.

Clarifying the safeguard duty, the US administration had admitted that certain sections were not prepared for rapid globalisation.

''This vindicates our position at Doha'' where the agenda for WTO negotiations was finalised, he said.

Describing the US as the ''freest of free markets,'' Maran said that fortunately it had been made clear that the safeguard duty would continue only for three years.

Asked whether similar steps would be taken in India, the minister said India was already notorious for being the number one country in taking anti-dumping measures.
