anurag (Fri Aug 15 1997 7:35 IST)
Where do you see the indian armed forces in terms of technology over the next 10 years. Will our IT sector achieve some self-reliance in engineering top of the line naval and air command equipment?

Savdhaan (Fri Aug 15 1997 7:36 IST)
Namashkaar Brar Saab!! Swaran Jayanti pe Shubh Kamna aap sweekar kijiye! Please give our Salaami to all the men under your command for the yoeman service they render to our Bharat Mata!! The men in uniform are our true rakshaks....JAI HIND!

Sriram Singh (Fri Aug 15 1997 7:38 IST)
General Brar, do you think after 50 years, our attitude to defence and national security issues is still ad hoc?

Clauswitz (Fri Aug 15 1997 7:39 IST)
Sir, 2 queries: First, if in 1962 the IAF had been used, would he have held our ground against the Chinese? and second, truthfully, how prepared are we to hold out against China today?

Ashok (Fri Aug 15 1997 7:39 IST)
Sir,what's your opinion about the Indian defence policy.Shall we adopt a hawk-like policy with respect to Pakistan??

Mark Tully (Fri Aug 15 1997 7:43 IST)
Hello Mr. general, my best wishes on the 50th Independence day. General what are your views on the India's reluctance towards deployment on indigineously bulit misslies.

Sir Coward (Fri Aug 15 1997 7:43 IST)
Do you think India may have made a tactical error by becoming a signatory of the chemical weapons' convention. I mean, China to the north, Pak to the west and US in the ocean...

Ashok (Fri Aug 15 1997 7:44 IST)
Do you think Pakistan is in possession of an atomic bomb. How much is the nation prepared to counter such an attack

Clauswitz (Fri Aug 15 1997 7:47 IST)
Thank you for your reply to my first query. During Op Bluestar, was it the Bihar Regiment which was used? Strategy of using troops from different zones of the country. Can this strategy work forever? Is it not dangerous?

Saavdhan (Fri Aug 15 1997 7:50 IST)
Mr Brar: Do you think that Kashmir can be resolved??

kammo (Fri Aug 15 1997 7:50 IST)
thanks sirji, what are your memories of the 15 august 1947 the day we got our freedom.

Saavdhan (Fri Aug 15 1997 7:53 IST)

Saavdhan (Fri Aug 15 1997 7:57 IST)
Generalji, Do you think we could stop the in-fighting within the country? Or should the Military step in ....will military rule be good for us?

Clauswitz (Fri Aug 15 1997 7:57 IST)
Thanks again for the reply. Next query, how badly affected was troops morale after Op Bluestar? And should not policing duty for army be stopped?

Biddanda Thimmaya (Fri Aug 15 1997 7:57 IST)
Sir: In the event of host

Niharika Sahay (Fri Aug 15 1997 7:58 IST)
Good evening Mr Brar: I understand that Pakistan got a better deal of the armed forces during Partition. Fifty years hence how are the two forces placed today. Which country has an edge over the other?

Edward (Fri Aug 15 1997 7:58 IST)
General still waiting for answer to my first question. A supplementary question: Can we work towards building relations with Pakistan so that in case of any attack from China the two can be brothers ? I understand a lot of effort is needed, but dont forget we are a new generation ready to take on tasks impossible.

Mark Tully (Fri Aug 15 1997 7:58 IST)
General, what are your views on the operation blue star. was the action justified

Kiran (Fri Aug 15 1997 8:0 IST)
Mr Brar: Do you forsee a situation where India will no longer remain united???

shankar (Fri Aug 15 1997 8:0 IST)
Good Evening , General

Kiran (Fri Aug 15 1997 8:1 IST)
Mr Brar: Do you think India should be a party to NPT????

Sir Coward (Fri Aug 15 1997 8:3 IST)
Sir, you haven't answered me...

Saavdhan (Fri Aug 15 1997 8:3 IST)
Generalji, Do you think we could stop the in-fighting within the country? Or should the Military step in ....will Military Rule be good for us?

Clauswitz (Fri Aug 15 1997 8:8 IST)
Sir, without N-arms, are we still prepared for a high-tech war involving top level communications, laser tech and satellite spies. Will it not make sense to spend money on this side rather than worry about N-arms?

WingCommander Malhotra (Fri Aug 15 1997 8:9 IST)
Hi Brar, r u there?????

Clauswitz (Fri Aug 15 1997 8:10 IST)
As a military man, which battle has impressed/influenced you the most? One from this century and one from the last?

Edward (Fri Aug 15 1997 8:14 IST)
Sorry for this cross-talk, but just cant resist the temptation. Question to Mark Tully: Do you have a solution to change the Indo pak relation for better? As a foreiner you probably understand both the sides better. I presume you will give a honest solution and not the official British stand.

Niharika Sahay (Fri Aug 15 1997 8:19 IST)
If the armed forces are well geared why the talk that there's a dearth of officers in the army?

Saavdhan (Fri Aug 15 1997 8:19 IST)
If you had the choice, what new weapon would you add to our arsenal..that we do have at present?

Sainik (Fri Aug 15 1997 8:23 IST)
Sir, What are the oppurtunities for techies in the armed forces today. Are there any training courses (educational) available. Can professionals (people with non-military backgrounds) be part of the defence forces in any way

Sainik (Fri Aug 15 1997 8:23 IST)
Thanks much for your earlier answer

ven (Fri Aug 15 1997 8:24 IST)
General Brar; I think that in India Ex-Servicemen are being given a raw deal. The Service conditions are poor considering the hazardous nature of the jobs. I wish atleast the private sector would give preference in employment to service personnell after they are discharged/ retired.

Edward (Fri Aug 15 1997 8:27 IST)
General what is the solution to the Kashmir problem? Mark Tully your view once again.

Clauswitz (Fri Aug 15 1997 8:28 IST)
Sir, there have been many reports of the Indian armed forces facing a shortfall of officers and top level candidates. Is it because there is little prospect of war, and therefore less chance to achieve fame and immortality in uniform? After all, is there any such thing a famous peace-time general?

Rajeev Mohnot (Fri Aug 15 1997 8:29 IST)
Namaskar. I want to know military role in politics. Isn't it is your (military) responsibility to check these blood suckers/corrupt politicians. I think it is right time for military to take control of India and clean our motherland from voilence, corruption, hunger. I think that will be the real Independance for India - the country which we love. Please save the country.

Abhi (Fri Aug 15 1997 8:30 IST)
Sir, I strongly believe that there is a demonstration effect where armed forces personnel see a spate of materialism around them - which they do not possess & yet exists due to their very presence !! Doesn't this, over a period of time, chip away at their integrity, etc. ??

Saavdhan (Fri Aug 15 1997 8:30 IST)
Do you think conscription will be good for our youth? They seem to be so carefree and take our freedom for granted...PLEASE ANSWER!

Sainik (Fri Aug 15 1997 8:30 IST)
from a defence point of view, if there is 3rd war with pakistan, would you prefer have strong sanctions like the US has against Iraq or make pakistan a part Of India after we have won the war.

ven (Fri Aug 15 1997 8:31 IST)
GeneraL; i agree with what you say about political base and money. But,mny of our freedom fighters had no money, sometimes no political base but they had an ideal. In today's India, intellectuals talk but do nothing to change. i include NRI's like me in this category.

Clauswitz (Fri Aug 15 1997 8:31 IST)
Sorry for repeating my earlier post.

Sainik (Fri Aug 15 1997 8:32 IST)
Namasker Rajeev bhaiya. This is Rajeev in NY

Sainik (Fri Aug 15 1997 8:34 IST)
Ven, I agree. But as NRI aren't we better off in terms that atleast we have hope that someday our nation will be better rather than being in India, not being able to do anything, becoming a part of the system a NAPUNSAK. At least by not being in India we are provinding employment for others in India.

Saavdhan (Fri Aug 15 1997 8:35 IST)
Sir, a couple of years ago, I was horrified to learn that our NDA admissions have also fallen prey to corruption and nepotism. First of all, isn't the NDA a bastion for all that is honourable? and secondly,Is there any cure?

Abhi (Fri Aug 15 1997 8:35 IST)

ven (Fri Aug 15 1997 8:37 IST)
GeneraL; Nothing gets done unless there is activism. EX-Servicemen associations must do what the rest of the country does namely organize, make your voice heard. I say this because the Services are the only disciplined people around and we need you in public and private service. Ex-servicemen can be trained for other professions. Example how come the Sappers and miners who are technically qualified are also unable to find jobs after they retire. I talk about retirement here because it is my understanding that Army personnell except at the very top retire at an early age.
