Golden Globes 2012: The Descendants wins Best Picture

With that, host Ricky Gervais signs off. This edition ended with the usual suspects emerging as winners and no controversies. Which, given the Globes' (and Ricky Gervais's) reputation, must be a first.

Here's congratulating the big winners and hoping that team Brad Pitt gets some nods at the Oscars for Moneyball.

The winner quips, "Michael Fassbender took the pressure of nudity off me." German-Irish actor Fassbender was nominated for Shame in the same category. The film's explicit sexual scenes earned it a NC-17 rating in the United States.

Last year's Best actor winner for The King's Speech -- Colin Firth gives away the best actress in a motion picture (drama) award to Meryl Streep for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. And despite being the obvious choice, Streep, who holds the record for most individual Globe wins (25) is surprised.

Dujardin also won the best actor award at the Cannes Film Festival where the film was premiered. The film follows the decline of a Hollywood star as he fades away with the silent films era and the talkies take over.

Best actor in a motion picture -- comedy/musical award goes to Jean Dujardin of The Artist. The dishy actor delivers is acceptance speech with a heavy accent as his American counterparts look on indulgently. The film has six Globe nominations, the most of 2011.

The hit ABC sitcom is in its third season and soaring in popularity. Besides Sofia Vergara, Eric Stonestreet, who plays Cameron on the show, is also nominated. The show emerged as one of the biggest winners at the recently concluded Emmy awards too.

Angelina Jolie looks angelic as she presents the best director award. Interestingly, George Clooney is nominated for The Ides Of March and so is his The Descendants director Alexander Payne.
