Inspiration is the theme of 2017's Oscars, reveals Jimmy Kimmel and credits talk show host David Letterman for being his.

Shiny Charlize Theron and sparkly Shirley MacLaine take a break from their mutual admiration society to present the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film.

And the coveted prize goes to Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi's The Salesman (the film enjoyed a packed screening at last year's Mumbai Film Festival) who boycotted the ceremony to protest against Trump's Muslim ban. This is his second Oscar.

"My absence is out of respect for my country and the six others" banned by Trump. "We need empathy now more than ever,"  he wrote in a note read out by his representative.
