Mohandas Menon
2nd Test, Day 3 at Port of Spain, Trinidad
** For the second time in succession India has taken a first innings lead at
this venue. It had a 140 run lead when it last played at this venue in 1997.
** For the second time in his career, Tendulkar has a hundred and a duck in
the same Test match. He had scores of 0 and 136 against Pakistan at Chennai
in January 1999.
** Tendulkar now emulates Vijay Manjrekar by becoming the second Indian
batsman to do so on two separate occasions. Manjrekar had scores of 133 & 0
(against England at Leeds in June 1952) and 108 & 0 (also against England at
Corporation Stadium, Madras, in January 1964). Incidentally 11 Indian
batsmen have scored a duck and a hundred on 13 occasions in Tests.
** Tendulkar, now also joins a select band of 12 other batsmen, including
Don Bradman, who have a duck and a hundred in same Test match on two
separate occasions. No other Test batsman has done it more than two
occasions.
** On the first day, Tendulkar had brought his tally of 29 Test hundreds on
par with the Sir Don, however on the third day, by registering his eighth
duck of his career, he went past Australian's tally of seven ducks in
Tests.
** Incidentally, Tendulkar's last duck before this one came against
Australia at Adelaide when he was controversially adjudged 'leg-before' by
Australian umpire Daryl Harper after he was hit on the arm by a Glenn
McGrath delivery. Since the Adelaide duck, Tendulkar has aggregated 2196
runs (avg. 68.63) in 21 matches and 35 innings, with eight hundreds and 9
fifties, before registering his eighth duck in the second innings of this
Test match.
** This was Tendulkar's first duck against the West Indies in his 10th match
and 15th innings. His previous lowest score against this team was the four
he made in the Bridgetown Test match in March 1997.
** Adam Sanford, meanwhile, joins six other bowlers - New Zealander Danny
Morrison (in 1989-90), Zimbabwean John Traicos (1992-93), South African
Brett Schultz (1992-93), Australian Glenn McGrath (twice - in 1996-97 &
1999-00), Pakistanis Saqlain Mushtaq and Shoaib Akhtar (both in 1998-99) -
who have the distinction of claiming Tendulkar's wicket before he has opened
his account in Test cricket.
** Tendulkar, who has been a 'leg-before' victim in his last five Test
innings, has now been dismissed in this manner on 20 occasions. He went past
Dilip Vengsarkar's tally of 19 such dismissals. Now among Indian batsmen
only Kapil Dev (28) has been dismissed 'leg-before' on more occasions than
Tendulkar.
