One of the finest wins in
recent times: Bedi
Onkar Singh in New Delhi
Former India captain Bishen Singh Bedi has congratulated Sourav Ganguly and his team mates on their scintillating win over the West Indies at Port of Spain. India defeated the West Indies by 37 runs in an absorbing Test match that saw fortunes fluctuate throughout the five days.
"I congratulate Indian captain Ganguly and his men for bringing about a scintillating win over the West Indies. I had the good fortune of watching the match till the very end and I must say that the victory was a team victory. All the players played like one unit," Bedi told rediff.com on Wednesday.
He singled out the Indian seam attack for praise. "The three seamers combined very well and they bowled magnificiently. I felt that this was the best game I have seen in recent times. Right from day one till the very end the match kept swinging one way to the other. We lost six wickets for a matter of 13 runs in the second innings. We tried our best to lose the match but in the end, the West Indies could not win it."
Bedi felt that if Anil Kumble had been included in the side the Indian team could have been able to wrap up the match much earlier.
"I feel that we should have played Kumble. This is the kind of wicket on which he would have thrived and we would have been able to cap the match much earlier. But we won and that is what matters at the end of the day," he said.
He hoped that the team would now go all out to increase the lead and make it at least 2-0, if not 3-0.
"We should not sit on this victory like we did in 1971. We should strive hard to increase the margin. The myth that India cannot win abroad has been broken. We won the game when Lara was consumed in the second innings by Nehra. Chanderpaul played a superb innings. It was he who stood between India and victory till the end. He, unfortunately, ran out
of partners," Bedi said.
