Mohandas Menon
2nd Test, Day 5 at Port of Spain, Trinidad
** Sourav Ganguly has led India to victories in four countries - in
Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and now West Indies - a feat no other Indian
Test captains have been able to achieve. His four wins in 10 matches abroad,
is the maximum by an Indian Test captain bettering the previous best of
three wins each by Nawab of Pataudi Jr (in 13 matches) and Bishan Bedi (in
14 matches). All three wins for Pataudi came in New Zealand in 1968, while
Bedi's wins came in the West Indies (in 1976) and two in Australia (in
1978).
** Captaining in his 20th match, Ganguly has led India to Test victories in
10 matches. Now only Mohammad Azharuddin - 14 victories in 47 matches - have
more wins than Ganguly as Indian captain. With this win he went past the
tally of nine wins each by Nawab of Pataudi Jr and Sunil Gavaskar.
** India's 37 run win was its second closest in terms of runs in Tests after
its 28 run victory over England at Calcutta on January 4, 1973.
** It was West Indies' third closest defeat in Tests in terms of runs after
its 26 run and 30 run losses - both against England at Port of Spain and
Leeds in April 1974 and July 1969 respectively.
** India recorded its 71st win in 353 matches, while it was the West
Indies' 109th loss in 383 matches.
** India playing its 166th Test abroad, registered its 17th win and its
third in the Caribbean (all at this venue). The summary of India's wins
abroad are:
Venues Tests Wins %wins
in Australia: 3 wins in 28 matches (10.71% wins)
in England: 3 wins in 41 matches (7.32% wins)
in New Zealand: 4 wins in 16 matches (25.00% wins)
in Sri Lanka: 2 wins in 12 matches (12.25% wins)
in Zimbabwe: 1 wins in 4 matches (25.00% wins)
in Bangladesh: 1 wins in 1 matches (100.00% wins)
in Pakistan: 0 wins in 20 matches (0.00% wins)
in South Africa: 0 wins in 9 matches (0.00% wins)
Total: 17 wins in 166 matches (10.24% wins)
** With India winning its third Test match at the Queen's Park Oval in Port
of Spain, this ground is easily India's happy hunting ground abroad. The
Eden Park at Auckland and the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), which have
seen two Indian victories, remain India's second favourite venues abroad.
For the record, India's best venue at home is the MA Chidambaram Stadium at
Chepauk in Chennai. India have won 10 matches at this venue, including its
first in 1952.
** In the last eight matches the West Indies have lost six and drawn two,
while in the same number of Test matches India have won and drawn four each.
** Though the West Indies lost this Test match, its total of 275 was the
fourth highest by any team in the fourth innings of a Test match against
India. The highest scores in the fourth innings against India still remain
as the 343-8 by Australia at Perth in December 1977 (India lost by two
wickets), 307-7 by Sri Lanka at Kandy in September 1985 (Match drawn, was
set a target of 376) and 276-5 by the West Indies at Delhi in November 1987
(India lost by five wickets).
** This was India's third Test win after being sent in to bat. India had
beaten New Zealand by 272 runs at Auckland in March 1968 and Australia by 59
runs at Melbourne in February 1981 after being sent into bat by the opponent
captain.
