Mohandas Menon
3rd Test, Day 4 at Bridgetown, Barbados
** Zaheer Khan’s quick-fire 46 was his highest Test score in his 14th match,
which just eclipses his previous best of 45 against Sri Lanka at Colombo
(SSC) in August last year.
** Incidentally, his score was the second highest by any visiting number
nine batsman at this ground. South African Shaun Pollock’s unbeaten 106 in
March last season remains the best.
The other two bigger scores achieved by
a number nine batsmen at this venue are by both West Indians - Malcolm
Marshall (63 against New Zealand in April 1985) and Wilf Ferguson (56 not
out against England in January 1948). Just for the record, the previous
highest score by an Indian number nine at this venue was the 33 by Syed
Kirmani in April 1983.
** With scores of 48 and 60 (unbeaten) Sourav Ganguly for the first time in
his career in 56 matches, has top-scored for his team in both innings of a
Test match. He now becomes the only third Indian batsman to achieve this
feat while leading the side.
The others being: Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi (64 &
148) against England at Leeds in June 1967 and Sachin Tendulkar (116 & 52)
against Australia at Melbourne in December 1999.
However all these three
instances came for the losing sides. Incidentally, the only other Indian
batsman to top score in each innings of a Test at this venue was Mohinder
Amarnath (91 & 80) during the 1983 series.
** Merv Dillon’s match figures of 8-123 were the best of his career in 24
matches. His previous best was the 7-91 against South Africa at Kingston in
April 2001. However, most importantly on both occasions he took his team to
victory.
** By conceding 23 runs in six overs on the fourth day Cameron Cuffy’s
economical analysis of 18-15-3-0 on the third day, may not find a place in
the record books. However his final bowling analysis in the second innings
of 24-16-26-1 (@ 1.08 runs per over) was still the third best by a West
Indian pace bowler (bowling at least 24 overs) against India.
Only Frank
Worrell (left-arm medium pace) and Gerry Gomez (right arm medium pace) had
better economical analysis than Cuffy - Worrell’s figures were: 27-18-16-0
(r/o: 0.59) also at this same ground in March 1962, while Gomez had figures
of 46.1-20-42-1 (r/o: 0.91) at Port of Spain in February 1953.
** The defeat by ten wickets was India’s 13th such loss in Tests. This was
India’s fourth such loss to the West Indies after Port of Spain (in 1962),
Kingston (in 1976) and at this same venue (in 1983).
** This was India’s third ten-wicket loss under Ganguly’s captaincy. They
had earlier lost to Australia (at Mumbai, March 2001) and to Sri Lanka (at
Galle, August 2001) by identical margins.
** For the West Indies this venue has proved to be its happy hunting ground
- they have won 20 matches out the 38 played here. India however have lost
its seventh match (including the last five) out of the eight it has played
here.
** India have now lost more Test matches only at Lord’s, London (9 matches)
and at Eden Gardens, Calcutta (8).
