Long retired from the game, Gavaskar still remains one of India's most loved and respected cricketers. In his playng days, he would receive as many as 40 to 50 letters a week throughout the year.
One of the most heart-felt messages he got was from a fan who was suffering from cancer: "I want to see a century from you at Bombay before I die. I have just two months to live."
Such was the faith Indians had in him.
Now a commentator for ESPN-STAR, he has carved a niche for himself in media.
