Sachin Tendulkar scored a world record 35th Test century in the first Test against Sri Lanka on Saturday to surpass compatriot Sunil Gavaskar for the most number of centuries in Test cricket.

Playing in his 125th Test, the 32-year-old reached the milestone with a single off Chaminda Vaas in the final session of play at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium in New Delhi.

He had equalled Gavaskar's mark of 34 centuries against Bangladesh at Dhaka, in December last year.

This was his seventh century against Sri Lanka in the longer version of the game. He has also scored seven centuries against Australia, his next best is six against England.
