Akali Dal-Badal suffers setback, Congress gains in PunjabOf the 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab, the Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiromani Akali Dal-Badal ruling alliance barely managed to retain the Gurdaspur and Tarn Taran seats. The Congress has won 8 seats. The Ludhiana seat was wrested by the Congress with its nominee Gurcharan Singh Ghalib defeating Amrik Singh Aliwal of the SAD-B by 105,000 votes. Cine star Vinod Khanna of the BJP defeated Sukhbans Kaur Bhinder of the Congress by 1,399 votes in a multi-cornered contest in Gurdaspur. The BJP retains the seat. Union Food Minister Surjeet Singh Barnala (SAD) lost to Simranjit Singh Mann of the Akali Dal-Amritsar by 86,317 votes in a multi-cornered contest in Sangrur. Praneet Kaur, wife of state Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh, defeated Surjit Singh Rakhra of the Shiromani Akali Dal-Badal by over 70,000 votes in the Patiala Lok Sabha seat. The Congress gains the seat. Captain Singh is the former maharaja of Patiala. Bhan Singh Bhaura of the Communist Party of India defeated Chatin Singh Samaon of the Shiromani Akali Dal-Badal by over 62,000 votes in a multi-cornered contest in the Bhatinda (reserved) constituency. The CPI gains the seat. Union Minister of State for Industry Sukhbir Singh Badal, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal's son, lost to Jagmeet Singh Brar of the Congress by 3,414 votes in a multi-cornered contest in Faridkot. The SAD-B loses the seat. In Tarn Taran, Tirlochan Singh Tur of the SAD-B defeated Gurinder Singh Kairon of the Congress by 70,000 votes. The SAD-B retains the seat. Santosh Chaudhary of the Congress defeated Satnam Singh Kainth of the Bahujan Samaj Morcha in the Phillaur (SC) constituency by over 26,500 votes. Former Union minister R L Bhatia of the Congress defeated state BJP president Daya Singh Sodhi in Amritsar by 31,000 votes. The Congress regains the seat. Shamsher Singh Dulo (Congress) defeated Satwinder Kaur Dhaliwal (SAD-B) by 73,152 votes in Ropar (SC). The Congress regains the seat. In Hoshiarpur, Charanjit Singh Channi of the Congress defeated Kamal Chaudhary (BJP) and wrested the seat for this party. Balbir Singh of the Congress defeated Prabhjot Kaur of the SAD-B in Jalandhar by more than 27,000 votes . UNI
