Bad show for BJP in Karnataka

The Bharatiya Janata Party could retain only four of the 13 seats it won in Karnataka in 1998. Namely, Dharwad North, Chikmagalur, Bangalore South and Mangalore.

The BJP suffered its worst humiliation when Union Rural Development Minister Babagouda Patil was mauled in Belgaum by Congress nominee Amarsingh Patil for over 51,000 votes. It, however, snatched the Davangere and Bijapur seats from the Congress.

The Congress wrested eight seats from the BJP including Kanara and Udupi in the coastal belt, besides Shimoga in the Malnad region from where former chief minister S Bangarappa made a re-entry to the Lok Sabha, repeating his 1996 victory.

While the Janata Dal-Secular, which contested 27 seats, could not win any, the Janata Dal-United emerged victorious in three -- Chikkodi (SC) from where Ramesh Jigajinagi who contested on the Lok Shakti ticket last time, retained the seat as JD-U nominee, Chamarajnagar (SC) and Chitradurga.

In Chamarajnagar (SC), Srinivas Prasad, who had won the seat for four successive terms since 1984 as Congress nominee, won as JD-U nominee. He had lost in 1996 and 1998 as an independent to Siddaraju (JD).
