47.2% polling recorded in
first phase of J&K poll

The final turnout in the first phase of the Jammu and Kashmir election was officially placed on Tuesday at 47.2% with Kargil district, a frequent target of Pakistani shelling, recording the highest turnout of 75.89%.

Even the hotbeds of militancy - Kupwara, Poonch, Rajouri and Baramulla districts - witnessed a significant 55.39%, 52.36%, 44.44% and 41.72% of polling, respectively, according to statistics released by the Election Commission in Delhi on Tuesday.

The five border districts have an electorate of 1.56 million (15.6 lakh).

Among the assembly segments, Uri in Baramulla district recorded the highest turnout (86.68%) while Sopore in the same district witnessed the lowest (7.83%).

Surankote assembly constituency in Poonch, where just five days before polling militants attacked an election rally killing 12 persons, saw a significant voter turnout of 35%.

Other assembly segments, which witnessed a high voter turnout were Gurez in Baramulla (76.70%), Kargil (74.89%), Zanskar (73.74%), Karnah in Kupwara (70.26%), Mendhar in Poonch (60.58%) and Poonch-Haveli (60.32%).

Among the constituencies, which witnessed a low turnout were Baramulla (24.06%), Sangrama in Baramulla (24.75%) and Rajouri (27.16%).
