Sikhs based in the US have welcomed the elevation of Dr Manmohan Singh to the post of prime minister of India.
Washington-based Sikh Council on Religion and Education chairman Dr Rajwant Singh said, "This is welcome news that a Sikh has been named to the top job in India. Congress Party leader Sonia Gandhi has shown wisdom and courage in naming a person who is well qualified to lead India. Dr Manmohan Singh is the right choice for this crucial position."
He said Singh has shown always the dedication to serve India. His reputation, he added, is not tainted 'with corruption like many other politicians'. "His appointment is a matter of pride for the entire Sikh community," he said.
"We are also pleased that the leading party displayed its commitment to secularism and respect for diversity. The naming of Dr Manmohan Singh being a member of a minority is a step in that direction, which also solidifies their vow to stand by those principles. This has further strengthened the democracy in India," he said
The Sikhs, he said, has a turbulent relationship with the Congress. "This gesture by Sonia Gandhi certainly paves a way for a new spirit of reconciliation. This will go long way in building trust and understanding," he said.
