India will attain greater heights of economic prosperity and growth under the "able guidance" of prime minister-designate Manmohan Singh, Democratic New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, co-chair of the India caucus in the US Senate, has said.

Delivering the keynote address at the Asia Society's annual dinner to celebrate Indo-American relations, Clinton congratulated Singh on his appointment andĀ also the Indian voters on their spectacular demonstration of the power of their votes.

"The smooth transition of power from the [Atal Bihari] Vajpayee government to the one led by the Congress and its allies," she said, indicated the sound democratic traditions of India.

Recalling her visit to India, she hoped that Indo-American relations would continue to grow in several fields, including military, economic and political areas.

The gala black-tie dinner to fund the Asia Society's education programmes was attended by about 450 of Washington's elite, including senior officials of the US administration, the Asian diplomatic corps, including Rakesh Sood, currently in charge at the Indian embassy, and members of Congress.
