Home, not alone: Amartya Sen underlines correlation between political stability and development

Nobel laureate Amartya Sen stressed the need for political stability and sincere efforts to remove poverty saying that mere economic theories or writings would not help solve the problem.

''There cannot be two opinions about removal of poverty. But opinion might differ on the way. It should be removed,'' Prof Sen told mediapersons on his arrival at Calcutta Airport from London on way to Dhaka.

Prof Sen said political stability was related to success of any long-term economic policy. Political stability was also needed for economic development.

He said removal of poverty did not depend only on one factor. ''It depends on many factors like primary education, uniformity in land reforms and primary health service. Optimum use of market is also a factor,'' he added.

Earlier, the Nobel laureate who was accompanied by his daughter Antara was given a rousing welcome at the airport by West Bengal Finance Minister Ashim Dasgupta, himself a Massachusetts Institute of Technology scholar, city mayor Prasanta Chatterjee and a large number of people.
