'Resurgent Punjab' to woo big business houses

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has promised a ''red carpet welcome" to the big industrial houses for setting up their industrial units in Punjab.

After commissioning the Rs 2.5 billion chemical complex set up by Siel Limited at Khadauli village. He said there has been tremendous upsurge in the industrial activity in Punjab during the past 18 months and industrial projects involving investment of more than Rs 11 billion had commenced production.

He said Punjab Refinery was the biggest ever public sector project to be located in the state in the past 50 years. Central sector investment in Punjab since Independence had only been Rs 20.78 billion which was a mere 0.73 per cent of total central investment in the country.

With mega investment of Rs 160 billion in the refinery, the central investment in Punjab would be over Rs 180 billion, he added.

With the commissioning of Thein dam next month and some other projects, the state would be fully self reliant on the power front, he claimed.

Badal claimed that the power tariff was the lowest in the country and quality power will be ensured to entrepreneurs interested in setting up their units.

To encouraging industries in rural areas and to generating self-employment opportunities for youth in the state 'A' category, incentives were provided to industries in rural focal points.
