The government has increased the plan outlay on sports and games by Rs137.3 billion as projected in the Union Budget for 1999-2000 in comparison to last year's revised estimates.

The revised plan outlay on sports in 1998-1999 stood at Rs929.3 billion. The present Budget pegs it at Rs1.07 billion, an increase of about 12 per cent.

In view of the preparations for next year's Olympic Games in Sydney, special efforts are to be made to upgrade facilities in the coaching camp and broaden coverage under the Sports Authority of India's schemes.

Special stress will be put on laying synthetic tracks and surfaces in different regions of the country so that athletes can get used to them.

The Laxmibai National Institute of Physical Education at Gwalior will now receive grants directly for its various sports-related activities as per the directions of the University Grants Commission.
