Pivotals surge in record trade; Nifty up 35 points, 990.35

Pivotals further shot up on good buying support by bull operators and domestic institutions on the National Stock Exchange which witnessed the highest trade today.

Reflecting the upbeat trend, the S&P CNX Nifty index shot up by 35.35 points to 990.35 points from 954.70 points of the previous day.

The CNX Nifty Junior index rose to 55.55 points to 1662.35 points while the S&P CNX Defety rose by 28.45 points to 806.50 points.

The S&P CNX 500 improved by 18.99 points to 673.88 points and the CNX Midcap 200 index appreciated by 13.63 points to 590.82 points.

The total turnover was higher at Rs 27.80 billion, involving the highest trades of 352,246 on 118.29 million shares. The debentures turover was worth Rs 5.25 million.

Today, 769 securities gained, 305 lost while 82 remained unchanged today while 77 securities hit their price bands.

The NSE witnessed the highest number of trades and highest traded quantity today since its inception. Total number of trades recorded today was 352,246, involving 118.29 million shares and the total turnover Rs 27.80 billion.

The previous highest number of trades, 337,860 was recorded on June 1, 1998 and the previous highest traded quantity was 110.46 million shares on July 4, 1996.

The normal market closed at 15.30 hrs as usual, but in view of the heavy trading activity, the system log files exceeded the maximum allowable size and the closing session was affected.

So there was a need to conduct a second close session in order to enable members to review their positions. It may be noted that normal trading between 0945 hrs and 1530 hrs was not affected. The second close session was conducted after resetting the system logs at 17.30 hrs.
