UP offers sops for cinemas to prop up film industry

The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to allow cinema houses to install their own captive power plants to make them self-reliant in power. The move is expected to create a conducive atmosphere for the development of film industry in the state.

A government order in this regard was issued on May 23.

Industrial Development Commissioner A P Verma said the decision was taken following a directive of Chief Minister Kalyan Singh.

The installation of captive power plants at cinema houses would ensure uninterrupted power supply and surplus power could be utilised for supply to urban areas, he said.

The power generated in the captive power plants of cinema houses would be exempted from power duty for three years. If the cinema houses fulfilled minimum consumption guarantee, they would be provided the facility of billing on the basis of their actual power consumption like that of industries.

Verma said that under the film policy, setting up of ultra modern multiplexes would be promoted. Multiplex cinemas, which have invested more than Rs 15 million in the state, would be provided cent per cent enterainment tax exemption for three years.

Priority would be given to revive the cinema houses closed for a long time and if they get operational within the stipulated time, they would be entitled for 30 per cent entertainment tax relaxation for three years.

To make the film policy more liberal and transparent, the facility of grant would be provided to cinema houses set up in towns with over 300,000 population, he said.
