Japan clears funding for two projectsJapan has decided to provide nearly $900 million for the second phase of the Simhadri thermal power project and Delhi's metro rail system. Briefing newspersons in New Delhi on the talks visiting Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori had with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a Japanese foreign office spokesman, however, declined to comment on whether Tokyo would provide Official Development Assistance for 15 other on-going projects. "We are going on a case-by-case basis," he said, adding that India's 'sincere moratorium' against further nuclear testing was taken into account while clearing the funding for the two projects. Japan had stopped providing fresh ODA loans after the 1998 Pokhran tests. Replying to questions, the spokesman said that Japan wanted India to sign the CTBT at an early date.
