Maruti plans 5-day week to prune output

Email this report to a friend

Faced with a major demand slump across the entire automobile industry, Maruti Udyog Limited has decided to go on a five-day week for a trial period of three weeks.

The step has been initiated to cut down production, the company said in a media statement.

MUL managing director Jagdish Khattar confirmed the move stating that the company is cutting back production.

The five-day week is expected to be in force till its plant closes for a week-long maintenance holiday from June 12 to June 17.

MUL has an installed capacity of 350,000 units a year and is, at present, operating at 140 per cent capacity utilisation.

Having recorded a 55 per cent growth in sales in 1999-2000 fiscal, the industry is now faced with a major recession and Maruti despatches had dropped 31.2 per cent in April.
