Sector Focus : Tea

Tea: State of the industry (2000-01)

  • Domestic demand for tea is expected to increase by 1.2 per cent, due to an increase in availability.
  • Domestic tea production is expected to increase by 3.7 per cent, due to favourable weather conditions.
  • Exports are expected to increase by 12.9 per cent, due to an increase in domestic production.
  • In the domestic and export markets, prices realisations declined, due to an increase in domestic supply and low international prices .
  • Cost of production of tea is expected to increase, due to an increase in labour costs.
  • Margins of tea producers are expected to decline due to the decline in domestic and export realisations, and higher costs of production.

    Imports from Sri Lanka, of less than 15 million kg during a calendar year, would be allowed at the rate of 12.6 per cent. Such imports would be routed only through the Calcutta and Kochi ports

    Note For 2000-01, the landed cost and customs duty include the SACD of 4 per cent, effective since 1999-2000. In 1999-2000, the SACD was applicable only for non-traders, and hence, has not been included in the customs duty.
