Rail Budget pegs plan at Rs 110.90 billion

The Railway Budget for 2001-2002 presented in the Lok Sabha on Monday, pegs the annual plan at Rs 110.90 billion, marking a 11 per cent increase over the previous year despite no hike in budgetary support.

Presenting the Budget, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the thrust of the annual plan would be on safety, capacity augmentation and improving passenger amenities.

The Rs 110.90 billion outlay has been increased from Rs 100.02 billion provided in the revised plan outlay

for 2000-01.

Banerjee presenting her second budget said allocation for new lines has been increased to Rs 10.15 billion for 2001-02 from Rs 7.02 billion in the revised estimates for 2000-2001.

Provision for passenger amenities has been raised to Rs 2 billion from Rs 1.44 billion, while for track renewal Rs 20.50 billion has been provided against Rs 16.33 billion last year, showing a substantial increase of 26 per cent.

The budgetary support for the annual plan has been kept at last year's level at Rs 35.40 billion, market borrowings has been placed at Rs 40 billion.

The balance Rs 35.50 billion is to be met through combination of normal internal resources, non-traditional revenue generation and contribution from general revenues from railway safety works.
