General Budget on Feb 28; Rail Budget on Feb 26

The Budget session of Parliament will commence on February 19 and go on till May 11, Union Parliamentary Minister Pramod Mahajan said on Wednesday.

Briefing reporters after the Union Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Mahajan said that both the Houses will be adjourned for a short recess on March 23 till April 16.

Mahajan informed that President K R Narayanan will jointly address the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha on February 19.

"We have also requested Lok Sabha Speaker G M C Balayogi to allow the Budget at 11 a.m. on February 28," said Mahajan. "But," he quickly added, "that will depend on the Speaker's decision."

Mahajan also said that the Railway Budget is likely to be placed on February 26.

He also said that a proposal to amend the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956, had been mooted and may be taken up during the Budget session.

The amendment would ensure that doctors who obtain their medicine degrees abroad will have to go through a screening test in order to meet the requirements of the Indian medical establishment.

The minister also indicated that those acquiring bogus or false medical degrees from abroad will, henceforth, not be able to practice medicine in India.

Eight private members' bills would be introduced during the session. However, he did not indicate what the private member bills are.
