MTNL plans two mega call centres in Delhi, MumbaiThomas K Thomas In a bid to take on competition from the private sector, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd is planning to set up two mega customer care call centres in Delhi and Mumbai with a capacity of around 1,000 people at each centre. The two call centres will not only serve as customer service centre but also provide a single window for providing information on various services offered by MTNL, be it fixed line, mobile and Internet-based services. The call centres will handle queries related to commercial services, billing-related queries, directory enquiry and fault repair. MTNL in Delhi currently has a 250 seat call centre for handling queries related to fixed line services only. In order to expand its Internet services, MTNL is planning to expand its port capacity from existing 3,500 ports to an additional 5,000 ports in Delhi and Mumbai. The company is also planning to have its own gateway to meet the bandwidth requirement. MTNL is also introducing asymmetrical digital subscriber line equipment which provides Internet subscribers to have both voice and data facilities on the same fibre. It will provide broadband services on Internet and services such as video conferencing, video-on-demand and tele-medicine. MTNL has also started offering intelligent network services including virtual calling card, account card calling, virtual private network. It has also installed ATM switches at Delhi and Mumbai to offer high speed data services, video conferencing, broadband and video-on-demand. During the year 2000-01, MTNL in Delhi added 226,000 lines gross switching capacity and about 265,000 in Mumbai. During the year, the company achieved a financial turnover of Rs 57.84 billion with an increase of 11.63 per cent over the previous year's turnover of Rs 51.82 billion. The company's profit went up to Rs 17.20 billion as against a profit of Rs 13.99 billion last year. ALSO READ:
