Home ministry opinion on Jet will be binding

The ministry of civil aviation would abide by the opinion of the home ministry while deciding the fate of Jet Airways, the country's leading private airline which has been alleged by the Intelligence Bureau to have received "dubious investments" from Gulf countries.

Officials of the two ministries are expected to hold a meeting this week to discuss whether the security clearance given to Jet Airways needs to be reviewed in the light of the IB allegations.

"Security clearance is given by the home ministry and we will act as per their directions on the case. We are not the investigating authority in this case. We would extend all help to the home ministry to investigate the case if necessary," civil aviation secretary K Roy Paul said on the sidelines of a meeting organised by Assocham on Saturday.

According to a letter written by IB to the home ministry, investigations have "confirmed" that Jet Airways chairman Naresh Goyal had links with Dubai-based underworld dons Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Shakeel.

The letter also states that IB "suspects" that part of Goyal's investments in the airlines could have come from the underworld duo.
