Arun Kumar takes over as Nasscom chairmanBS Corporate Bureau
Besides, the meeting of the Nasscom executive council on April 20 co-opted Infosys president, chief executive and managing director Nandan Nilakeni as a member on the council. Kumar's one-year term as chairman would be effective April 1, 2002. Speaking on his appointment, Kumar, who is the managing director of Hughes Software System and chairman of Hughes Network System India, said: "My endeavour will be to work closely with the industry and government to ensure that we continue to focus on our exports growth and develop a strong domestic IT market in India." With signs of revival in the US economy and India gaining ground as the preferred ousourcing destination, the Indian software and service industry would continue to witness rapid growth, he added. Nasscom president Kiran Karnik said: "Kumar's deep understanding of the industry and his experience of working in international markets should be of special value to Nasscom's attempt to widen and deepen the global reach of India's software exports." Prior to coming to India to head the operations of HSS, Kumar was the head of the west-coast operations of Hughes Network Systems, based in San Diego. Kumar was also part of the team with Hughes that developed the first V-Sat and cellular telephony systems. The soft-spoken Kumar, who shifted his base to India in 1995, has been credited with success of the HSS, including its initial public offer. Kumar holds a B-Tech in electrical engineering from IIT Kanpur and has an MS in computer science. Arun Kumar has taken over as chairman of the National Association of Software and Service Companies. Kumar, who was earlier the vice-chairman of Nasscom, succeeds Phiroz Vanderewala.
