Bharti slashes cell tariffs by 58% in Karnataka

Bharti Mobile Ltd has slashed its mobile tariffs for its AirTel and Magic customers by around 58 per cent.

Spice Telecom, Bharti's rival in the circle, is expected to follow suit soon.

While AirTel's competitor Spice, the only other mobile operator in Karnataka, refused to comment, Bharti Mobile Ltd's chief executive officer Jagdish Kini said that being the leading operator in the state, it was imperative on their part to make mobile telephony more affordable.

A press statement from Bharti said a new tariff plan called, Talk One has been devised for customers who receive a high degree of incoming calls.

Incoming calls for such subscribers will be charged at Re 1 per minute. AirTel has also reduced monthly charges on its executive lifestyle plan to Rs 500 from Rs 575 and premium lifestyle to Rs 800 from Rs 899.

The reduced airtime charges in the new version of three plans are: Leisure Lifestyle club plan, the incoming and outgoing call charges are Rs 2.50 per minute; executive lifestyle club, the incoming and outgoing call charges are Rs 1.75 per minute and for the premium lifestyle club, the incoming and outgoing charges are Rs 1.25 per minute.

Existing customers can subscribe to the revised plans from their next billing cycle.

For pre-paid Magic subscribers, the revised airtime charges for Magic Regular package are Rs 3 per minute for incoming and outgoing calls and Re 1 per minute for incoming and Rs 4 per minute for outgoing calls on the Magic Easy Talk package.

Meanwhile, in a bid to tap the growing pre-paid cellular market, Essar-Hutchison on Thursday slashed the night airtime charges on its pre-paid card Speed by 50 per cent.

The outgoing tariffs for Speed users has been lowered from Rs 2.70 per minute to Rs 1.34 per minute for calls made between 10 pm and 8am.

Incoming tariff have also been brought down from Rs 1.98 per minute to Rs 0.98 per minute for calls received during the same period. There is no change in tariffs for calls made during the day.
