Centre asks FCI to keep 2 months foodgrains stock

The Centre on Monday asked Food Corporation of India to ensure stock of atleast two months foodgrain requirement in its godowns in all the states affected by drought and floods.

This was decided at a meeting held by Food and Public Distribution Minister Sharad Yadav with senior officials to review the situation caused by floods and drought in several areas.

Special arrangements would also be made to rush foodgrains to areas wherever it is required and food ministry would convene another meeting soon to assess the requirement of Uttar Pradesh and Assam, which witnessed heavy rains.

The meeting would also discuss measures to be taken to tackle drought situation in some parts of Uttar Pradesh, an official release said in New Delhi.

Yadav also reviewed the stock of damaged foodgrains with the central pool. The existing stock unfit for human consumption is 163,000 tonnes of the total stock of 63 million tonnes, it said.

It was decided that the FCI would take immediate action to offer this stock of damaged foodgrains as cattle feed to state governments, it added.
