TCS opens Uruguay centre

Tata Consultancy Services, Asia's largest software solutions and consulting services company, has kicked-off operations in Uruguay by opening a global development centre.

The GDC is located in the free trade zone of Montevideo, the Uruguay capital. The company plans to invest about $30 million over the next five years and recruit about 500 personnel in its Uruguay operations.

The GDC will handle systems development, maintenance, outsourcing besides testing and certification of software produced by third parties, especially Microsoft.

Apart from Uruguay, the centre will service other Latin American countries such as Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela and a part of the US. The clients who will be actively serviced from the centre include, BCI Bank, AIG, Compaq and Eli Lilly.

Speaking at the inauguration, S Ramadorai, CEO, TCS, said: "The inauguration of the Uruguay GDC is part of our strategy to come closer to customers in the region, and have a global workforce. Uruguay offers excellent talent source to serve the Latin American market. TCS has already recruited 17 consultants."

The GDC in Uruguay is TCS' ninth overseas development centre. The other centres are in Budapest, Tokyo, Melbourne, Toronto, New Jersey, Guildford, Phoenix and Columbus.

TCS is a division of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata group. It has over 19,000 professionals working at 106 branches in 29 countries. The company has over 800 global clients.
