Tata, Ambani, bankers meet Gates, discuss IT sceneMicrosoft chairman Bill Gates on Wednesday discussed the Indian IT and telecommunications scenario and its development with leading bankers and top industrialists Ratan Tata and Mukesh Ambani. A delegation of top bankers led by the Indian Banks'Association had an hour long meeting with Gates wherein they sought "lower and affordable" operating system used in Indian banking, thus enabling them to further spread their IT network, especially in the rural sector. "We have sought Microsoft products at affordable and lower rates so that we could increase IT application for our services, especially in the rural sector where we plan to use advanced technology", Corporation Bank chairman and managing director Cherian Varghese told reporters in Mumbai. "Gates said software solutions could become obsolete in the near future, hence systems have to be scalable", he added. Punjab National Bank chief S S Kohli said various Indian bankers will now hold discussion with Microsoft officials over this issue. Union Bank of India CMD and IBA deputy chairman V Leeladhar said we generally discussed the overview of banking sector in India and IT applications. While Tata who met Gates with Tata Consultancy Ltd CEO S Ramadorai declined to comment over his meeting stating that it was a mere "courtesy call." Ambani who spent almost an hour with the computer wizard said they discussed about the Indian IT scene and "affordability" of the software sector. "Nothing is happening between Reliance and Microsoft as of now", he added.
