The Golden Globes 2010, live report!

January 18, 2010, 9:34: Ok, everyone. Hope you enjoyed our live updates. Avatar reigns supreme! Hey, it might not be as Indian as Slumdog Millionaire, but the film clearly draws on some Indo-Eastern spiritual traditions, and even its name -- Avatar -- has roots in India. More cause to celebrate! Signing off!

January 18, 2010, 9:31: Avatar sits just 200-some million dollars from topping Titanic as the highest grossing movie of all time. This win will likely propel it to the top spot, along with Academy Awards success. Take a bow, James Cameron. You really are a Hollywood legend.

January 18, 2010, 9:30: Well, for the $250 million official budget (which was actually much higher, rumours have it), Cameron was expected to deliver the goods with Avatar. He did. And how.

January 18, 2010, 9:29: Winning best director and best film really bodes well for Cameron's chances at the upcoming Academy Awards. Difficult to imagine anyone unseating him at this point. Still, no film will be able to replicate the success of Slumdog Millionaire last year.

January 18, 2010, 9:28: And, without surprise, James Cameron's Avatar, the most expensive film ever made, brings home the award for Best Picture (Drama). Ever gracious, Cameron asks the audience to stop applauding for him, and start applauding for themselves!

January 18, 2010, 9:25: 'Alright, let's wrap this up,' says Roberts, as she gets ready to unveil the winner...

January 18, 2010, 9:24: Julia Roberts, who recently shot Eat, Pray, Love in India, onstage to present the Best Motion Picture - Drama... All eyes on centre-stage...

January 18, 2010, 9:17: Bridges is now considered the favorite to win at the Academy Awards.

January 18, 2010, 9:17: Jeff Bridges, Crazy Heart, wins the Best Actor (Drama) award! He won the same at the Critics' Choice awards, so this isn't too much of a surprise.

January 18, 2010, 9:15: Best Performance By an Actor in a Motion Picture Drama is next, another huge won. Will be interesting to see if Tobey Maguire gets any love for Brothers. Have been wondering how his career will shape up post-Spiderman.

January 18, 2010, 9:13: Also, needless to say, Robert Downey Jr's speech was absolutely fantastic -- perhaps the night's best.

January 18, 2010, 9:13: Robert Downey Jr for Sherlock Holmes! What a story, folks. From the absolute brink of self-destruction to three hits in a year and a half (Ironman, Tropic Thunder Sherlock Holmes). And this year he's beaten top acts like Damon (The Informant) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who many thought would win. Congrats, Robert.

January 18, 2010, 9:11: Here, one of the biggies: Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture (Comedy Or Musical). And the winner is...

January 18, 2010, 9:8: Sandra Bullock wins for her work in the The Blind Side! Well deserved, well deserved. The film has been a hit with audiences, with good reason. She was also nominated for the same award in the Comedy or Musical category, for The Proposal. Talk about one busy leading lady!

January 18, 2010, 9:6: Mickey Rourke on stage to present Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama)

January 18, 2010, 9:5: California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger gives us a clip from Avatar, and jokes that money for the film is being used to keep his state's budget afloat. (California is really, really, really broke)

January 18, 2010, 8:58: "The Hangover" wins for Best Film (Comedy or Musical), in a bit of a surprise. The movie did fabulously in India, as it did everywhere, but it's hard to imagine the HFPA falling for all the toilet humor and 'bromance' elements. Anyhow, it's good to see a film that didn't take itself too seriously being feted. Again, I don't think the filmmakers had this in mind when they started out! A Golden Globe? Really!?!?

January 18, 2010, 8:54: Hard to believe that Glee bested three of televisions most witty and intelligent comedies: The Office (which admittedly dragged a little this year), Modern Family (which burst onto the scene in a blaze of belly laughs), and 30 Rock (which is just pure comedic gold, really) Glee is a bit implausible and impractical, but a surefire winner in a 'safe but not outstanding' kind of way. Would probably do well in an Indian context.

January 18, 2010, 8:51: Wow. "Glee" has just won Best Television Series - Comedy Or Musical, beating out stalwarts in the genre like 30 Rock, Modern Family and The Office. Again, unbelievable!

January 18, 2010, 8:49: This makes Cameron even more of a favourite at the upcoming Academy Awards. Much like Danny Boyle last year, Cameron's success at the GG's likely means big things for the AA's.

January 18, 2010, 8:46: And, to be honest, while Avatar was perhaps a bit hampered by a humdrum story, its presentation and execution were borderline flawless. It's hard to think that cinema will ever be the same, after the 3-D experience Cameron invited us for.

January 18, 2010, 8:45: Not surprisingly, James Cameron, who took a twelve year time-out to bring us Avatar, wins the award for Best Director. Looks like all those years, and all that money, finall paid off!

January 18, 2010, 8:44: Gervais cracks on Mel Gibson, who famously shouted bigoted slurs while being arrested for Driving while intoxicated. Gervais: 'I like a drink as much as the next man, unless the man is Mel Gibson.' Hahahah! Gibson is on to present the Best Director (Feature Film) ward.

January 18, 2010, 8:41: After a lengthy, touching, well-done segment for Scorsese, the show shifts back to clips for the Best Film nominees. Now, Jodie Foster presents the clip for "The Hurt Locker", one of the clear favourites...

January 18, 2010, 8:25: Robert DeNiro and Leonardo DiCaprio now on stage to present lifetime achievement award to Martin Scorsese. If there's one man in cinema who deserves a lifetime achievement award, Scorsese would certainly be in the running.

January 18, 2010, 8:22: Waltz wins for Inglorious Basterds. Not surprising. Figured that Tarantino's latest would win an award sooner or later.

January 18, 2010, 8:21: Now, one of the night’s first really, really big awards – Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture. A bevy of great nominees to choose from: Matt Damon – Invictus; Woody Harrelson – The Messenger; Christopher Plummer – The Last Station; Stanley Tucci – The Lovely Bones; and Christoph Waltz – Inglourious Basterds

January 18, 2010, 8:19: Whoops, meant 'Best Supporting Actor'. Sorry! :)

January 18, 2010, 8:19: Halle Berry, in a most fantastic dress, complete with plunging neckline, presents Best Supporting Actor (Motion Picture). And the winner is...

January 18, 2010, 8:17: Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television is Chloë Sevigny, for her work in Big Love. Wow, a lot of people thought Jane Lynch had this all wrapped up!

January 18, 2010, 8:14: Twilight: New Moon star Taylor Lautner introduces the clip for "(500) Days of Summer” Great little film, this.

January 18, 2010, 8:11: "Mad Men" wins for Best Series Drama. Matthew Weiner accepts, with cast. A lot of competition, with House, Dexter, Big Love and True Blood up against it, but Mad Men carries the day. Not surprising for a show with 9 Emmys and a handful of Golden Globes!

January 18, 2010, 8:9: Critically-acclaimed "The White Ribbon" wins Best Foreign Film. The film, the brainchild of writer/director Austrian Michael Haneke, tells the story of a North German village in pre-World War I times.

January 18, 2010, 8:4: Which film has the Hollywood Foreign Press Association chosen for Best in Drama? Best in Comedy or Musical? Only time will tell!

January 18, 2010, 8:2: Samuel L. Jackson, who starred in Tarantino's 'Pulp Fiction', on to present a clip of Tarantino's latest: 'Inglorious Basterds'.

January 18, 2010, 7:58: Alec Baldwin, who's not present at the awards ceremony, wins for his stellar work in Tina Fey's 30 Rock. The night's first no show, and to a guy who everyone knew would win!

January 18, 2010, 7:56: ...Up In The Air, George Clooney-starrer, brings home the award for Best Screenplay. Wow! Wasn't expecting this. Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner, the writers, are graceful in their acceptance speech, and effusively praise novelist Walter Kirn, whose book helped inspire the story, and George Clooney, who brought their vision to life. Well deserved, guys!

January 18, 2010, 7:53: "The Bounty" co-stars Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler are on to present for Best Screenplay (Motion Picture). The nominees are: Neill Blomkamp, Terri Tatchell - District 9; Mark Boal - The Hurt Locker; Quentin Tarantino - Inglourious Basterds; Nancy Meyers - It's Complicated; Jason Reitman, Sheldon Turner - Up In The Air

January 18, 2010, 7:44: As expected, Barrymore’s work in Grey Gardens earns her the award for Best Actress in a miniseries or made-for-television movie. Her acceptance speech? Awkward at best.

January 18, 2010, 7:43: Kevin Bacon wins the Award for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Move for Television. His work in Taking Chance was superb, as always!

January 18, 2010, 7:37: Earlier, actor Mickey Rourke arrived at the ceremony with model Elena Kuletskaya. They both looked great!

January 18, 2010, 7:32: Uber-hunk Colin Farrell to present Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical... And the winner is... Meryl Streep! The Legend has done it again, this time for her fine performance in "Julia & Julia." She accepts with characteristic grace.

January 18, 2010, 7:30: Just a brief aside, to mention the legend of Meryl Streep. Most in show business would kill for a single Best Actress nomination as a leading award show. For two nominations at the SAME event? Who knows what they'd do. For Meryl, who excels in both "Julie & Julia," and “It’s Complicated,” this is nothing new.

January 18, 2010, 7:29: An obviously pregnant Amy Adams, along with Josh Brolin, is presenting for Best Mini-Series or TV Movie… And the winner is… Drew Barrymore-starrer “Grey Gardens"

January 18, 2010, 7:25: Also interesting will be the award for Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical), as pre-Golden Globes prognosticators had no idea what to expect. Small budget “(500) Days of Summer,” uproarious crowd pleaser “The Hangover,” Meryl Streep’s “Julie & Julia” and “It’s Complicated,” and the heavily panned musical “Nine”. Only time will tell!

January 18, 2010, 7:24: Cameron Diaz, who eternally looks vibrant, young and beautiful, looks positively spectacular in a ravishing rad dress.

January 18, 2010, 7:22: While we have a second, let’s look at the nominees for Best Motion Picture James Cameron’s 3-d extravaganza, 'Avatar'; critic-friendly 'The Hurt Locker'; Tarintino masterpiece, 'Inglourious Basterds'; African-American centric 'Precious'; George Clooney starrer, 'Up In The Air'. It’s wide open, but many believe “Up in the Air,” “Avatar” and “The Hurt Locker” have the best chances.

January 18, 2010, 7:18: "You can't buy a Golden Globe -- officially," host Ricky Gervais quipped early in the show.

January 18, 2010, 7:16: "Crazy Heart" wins for best song, it's theme. Congratulations!

January 18, 2010, 7:16: Now, the award for Best Original Song. Nominees: "Cinema Italiano" – Nine Music & Lyrics By: Maury Yeston "I See You" – Avatar Music By: James Horner and Simon Franglen Lyrics By: James Horner, Simon Franglen and Kuk Harrell "I Want To Come Home" – Everybody's Fine Music & Lyrics By: Paul McCartney "The Weary Kind (Theme from Crazy Heart)" – Crazy Heart Music & Lyrics By: Ryan Bingham and T Bone Burnett "Winter" – Brothers Music By: U2 Lyrics By: Bono

January 18, 2010, 7:14: If nothing else can be said for Gervais' performance, at least he's making these celebs uncomfortable. He's taking no prisoners!

January 18, 2010, 7:13: Former Beatles frontman, Sir Paul McCartney, with one of the night's great lines: "Animation isn't only for children. It's for adults who take drugs!" This, from the guy who gave us 'Yellow Submarine'

January 18, 2010, 7:10: Now, for the ladies’ version of the same award, we have Julianna Margulies winning for her role in The Good Wife.

January 18, 2010, 7:8: Another feel-good moment, as Dexter actor Michael C Hall, who recently revealed that he’s been battling Hodgkin's lymphoma cancer, has won Best Actor in Television (Drama). Reports say that Hall’s cancer is in remission.

January 18, 2010, 7:4: As expected, Pixar's smash-hit "Up" has won the award for Best Animated Film. Like Avatar, the movie utilised 3-d technology to widespread applause and acclaim. This one was never really in doubt.

January 18, 2010, 7:3: Nicole Kidman, presenting the award, looks absolutely gorgeous in a gold cocktail dress. Lovely!

January 18, 2010, 7:2: Mo'Nique wins the supporting-actress Golden Globe for her role as an abusive mother in the US inner city drama "Precious”. There’s been a lot of talk of Mo’Nique getting a nominee for the Academy Awards in the same category. This win only bolsters her chances.

January 18, 2010, 7:0: Toni Collettes wins Best Actress (television) for "United States of Tara."

January 18, 2010, 7:0: "Let's get on with it before NBC replaces me with Jay Leno," says Gervais, in his trademark British drawl. Seems like NBC is going to be punished severely for the Conan - Leno fiasco.

January 18, 2010, 6:59: Nice to see the stars get so fully behind a good cause -- the earthquake in Haiti has everyone rallying together to give their support.

January 18, 2010, 6:57: Tina Fey, referring to the Conan O'Brien - Jay Leno spat at NBC, says this of the torrential downpour: "It's not rain. It's just god crying for NBC." Hahahaha!

January 18, 2010, 6:56: Things to watch out for: 1) 48-year-old British funnyman Ricky Gervais, who played Michael on the UK version of hit sitcom The Office, is the award show’s first host since 1995. He’s known for his acerbic wit and uncompromising attitude towards celebs – while many treat them with kid-gloves, he goes straight for the throat. He's promised to bring the pain this year, and has warned any celebrities not to cry if they win an award. Else, they risk facing his wrath!

January 18, 2010, 6:55: Unfortunately, Mother Nature has decided to play spoilsport, as a steady of deluge rain has dampened the red carpet festivities. Still, our stars are ready to soldier on!

January 18, 2010, 6:54: This year, the ceremony is being held inside the main ballroom at the Beverly Hilton Hotel International – a glorious venue indeed!

January 18, 2010, 6:54: Hello and welcome! We’re live blogging the 67th annual Golden Globes ceremony, the first major awards ceremony of 2010. In addition to its own prestige, a Golden Globe award often promises future success at the Academy Awards. So let's watch closely...
