Chikkala Ramchandra Rao, the NTR-TDP nominee, won 122,149 votes. T Subba Rao, the losing Congress candidate, had won the seat in 1991. Only he was the TDP candidate in that election. In fact, Kakinada has seen a see-saw battle between the Congress and TDP since 1984 with one party winning it one election, only to lose it the next. Thota Gopalakrishna, the winning candidate, won the seat in 1984 and was the losing candidate in 1989.
