In 1984, the first time NTR's Telugu Desam contested a general election, his party took this seat, its candidate Chinta Mohan winning 52.9 % of the votes. The next time, in 1989, Chinta Mohan won on a Congress ticket, and kept it up in 1991 as well, boosting his tally to 62 % then. In 1996, the Congress party retained this seat, but its candidate Nelavala Subrahmanyam's vote count falling to 46.38 %. The TDP's share of the vote was 39.34 %, and the NTR-TDP's count was 10.75 %.
