In the 1985 election the AGP won 60.9 % of the vote, compared to the Congress's 17.7 %. In the next election held from the state -- in 1991 -- the Congress won just 23.8 % of the vote, but won the seat. It improved its tally to 30.71 % in 1996, but the AGP, winning 44.30 %, wrested back the seat.
