In 1977 Ram Vilas Paswan was elected on a Bharatiya Lok Dal ticket. He retained the seat in 1980, but this time on a Janata Party ticket. He lost in the Rajiv wave of 1984, but sprang back in 1989, winning 84.1 % of the vote on the JD ticket. That also set a record for the largest margin of victory ever. In 1991, he vacated the seat which was still retained by the Janata Dal's Ram Sundar Dass. In 1996, Paswan, contesting on a JD ticket, defeated Dass who had by now moved on to the Samata Party. In the last election, the Congress's share of the vote touched an all-time low of 0.55 %.
