In 1957, when an election was first held here, the member elected was Acharya J B Kripalani, who fought on a Praja Socialist Party ticket. After this the constituency reverted to the Congress for the next three elections, before going the non-Congress way once again. In 1996, in fact, it was the Janata Dal's Nawal Kishore Rai who won from here, but the BJP's tally was not all that low: 21.25 % of the vote.
