It has always been a tossup between the Congress and the JD versions, right from the first election in 1967. In 1996, however, for the first time the BJP won the election, Satya Pal Jain defeating the Congress's Pawan Kumar Bansal by 24,000 votes. The Samata Party which was also in the fray, cornered 45,569 votes.
