Sikander Bakht was elected from here in 1977, on the Lok Dal ticket, and he quickly lost the next two elections to the Congress, which he contested as the BJP candidate. In 1991 T C Khandelwal finally broke the Congress hold over this seat, when he defeated two-time sitting MP J P Aggarwal. In 1996, Aggarwal and the Congress were voted back, despite the BJP fielding the high-profile Dr J K Jain, by 22,000 votes.
